The 52nd Edition of the Inner Ear Biology Workshop will take place in Rome on September 12th-15th, 2015.

The IEB Workshop is traditionally an extraordinary forum for understanding the mechanisms of ear diseases and for translating them into the clinic.

In recent years, the research concerning cochlear implants, cell regeneration and transduction, innovative drugs and stem cells application and genetic engineering have opened an exciting window on the possible treatment of sensorineural hearing loss.

The aim is to promote the progress in Audiology and Otology by increasing the dialogue between basic research and clinical practice.

In conjunction with the Workshop there will be an opening day Symposium focused on the perspectives of the inner ear research "from the Lab to the Clinic".

After poster and oral communications focused on etiology of the disease during IEB 2013 in Alcala de Henares and IEB 2014 in Sheffield, the second part of the AFHELO project is on the limelight.

Indeed, two posters will be presented at IEB 2015 in Rome: one focused on in vitro / mechanism of action of the AF243 drug and the other on its in vivo results.

Good and bad cholesterol have been know for decades in cardiovascular disease.

A similar concept has been recently highlighted in cancer.

Here we accumulate evidences supporting that such balance between good and bad cholesterol derivatives also exists in neurodegenerative diseases including sensorineural hearing loss.

In this review we also propose some therapeutic approaches that could be developed to increase the therapeutic arsenal of physicians.

ARO 37th Midwinter meeting in San Diego (USA) on February 22-26, 2014.

Oral presentation n° 153:  Noise-Induced and Age-Related Functional and Structural Cochlear Alterations in Igf1−/+ Mice.

Isabel Varela’s team showed that the level of the IGF-I hormone in brain lowers with aging or some rare diseases.

The lower it is, the more sensible is the organ of hearing to stress and/or inflammation processes that drive to hearing impairment.

These studies gave rise to a new in vivo model of hearing loss while enhancing comprehension about hearing loss processes in particular those related to aging. Furthermore, they support use of IGF-I or approaches increasing IGF-I levels to treat or prevent hearing loss.

These studies are part of AFHELO project.
